A radio can be battery operated, solar powered, rechargeable or hand crank for power to operate. Have spare batteries or way to re-charge if no solar power or hand crank. I use a radio that is rechargeable, solar and hand crank rechargeable. A low cost option is getting a used AM/FM radio at a thrift store or yard sale. AM radio stations will be able to broadcast even when Cell phone towers are out and should provide local updates to what is happening.
